May have sincerity and earnestness, and one may even claim them if one wishes.
Sincerity and earnestness don't come into being through the claiming.
Often sincerity and earnestness are lost the very moment they are claimed.
Sincerity and earnestness become just a drop of dew, melting away in the heat of the performance that claiming demands.
Having sincerity and earnestness doesn't by itself mean that what all we do and say is right.
If one truly has sincerity and earnestness, one will not do everything, won’t take on everything, or won’t say anything.
The only justification for what we do and say being right is that it is right.
The only justification is to know what is right, and then to act and speak according to its dimensions and standards.
Claiming to be sincere and earnest gives no license to say anything or do anything.
One can smother a person with loving embraces and kisses. A person can die of that smothering, and a person can be killed by it.
Sincerity and earnestness should lead a person to not saying and not doing just anything.
Sincerity and earnestness should lead a person to say, do, and undertake only what he knows.
It should lead to care, vigilance, and stepping back: not doing, not saying, not taking on what one doesn't know, and not giving opinions on matters one doesn't understand.
Under the banner of being sincere and earnest, one must not do work one doesn't understand.
Doing or saying anything about what one doesn't know is the greatest wrong, crime, and violence one can commit.
If one does so, mere sincerity and earnestness cannot, and must not, serve as a justification or a shield to escape responsibility for the consequences.
Only those who know what is right, who have studied it, and who act and speak accordingly are actually right, and only they do and speak what is right and just.
Anyone who acts, speaks, or takes on something without truly knowing, whether king, prime minister, or priest, is nothing but an aggressor. They speak and do only injustice and wrong.
