Wishing you an Independence Day that longs for true freedom — freedom that is felt, that is a heartbeat, beyond mere words.

Wishes for an independence day that is itself the state of not depending on anyone.

Wishes for freedom that is possible only to the extent that self-reliance is possible.

Know this: freedom is not just a word, not just a name — it is an experience, a state of being.

The nation and freedom exist for the sake of life, to carry life forward.

They exist for the sake of human beings, to carry human beings forward.

A country does not become a free country simply by writing the words “freedom” or “free” on the outside.

Remember — writing “sugar” on the label for decoration doesn’t turn chili powder into sugar.

Instead, freedom happens only when the people of that country are free of fear and are safe.

Instead, it happens when the people of that country make life a celebration, and when the country becomes a place that can make life a celebration.

Patriotism is not merely some outward chanting.

Patriotism is also a natural feeling and thought that blossoms spontaneously in people, arising in return when the country loves its people — when it gives them welfare, security, and a sense of safety.

If that happens, no one will need to tell people to love that country; they will simply end up loving it, unbidden.

Just as parental love isn’t something parents should expect back from their children without first giving their children love, affection, care, attention, and protection — patriotism is no different.

Those who govern the country should remember this.

People do not love their country so that rulers can celebrate, live, and act however they please.

Patriotism is not something rulers should try to manufacture by frightening people into tolerating their misconduct.

A country and its rulers that keep their own citizens in exploitation, fear, torment, and insecurity — that abandon their own citizens by frightening them, whatever the pretext — will not, in any case, be loved.

It is common for people, when a country makes them suspects and orphans them, to leave that country as suspects and orphans in return.

Patriotism is not something to be demanded — through intimidating glares and coercion — from poor Indians (upper-caste and Gujarati included) who, unable to make a living, without even minimal subsistence guaranteed, are forced to seek jobs and citizenship abroad.

Such helpless people have no use for the freedom we loudly celebrate — a freedom without abundance, one that remains confined to mere words.

അറിയണം: സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം വെറും വാക്കല്ല, പേരല്ല; അനുഭവമാണ്, അവസ്ഥയാണ്.

ജീവിതത്തിന് വേണ്ടിയാണ്, ജീവിതത്തെ മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകാനാണ് രാജ്യവും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും. 

മനുഷ്യന് വേണ്ടിയാണ്, മനുഷ്യനെ കൊണ്ടുപോകാനാണ് രാജ്യവും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും.

“സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം”, “സ്വാതന്ത്ര” എന്നൊക്കെ പുറത്ത് എഴുതിവെക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടല്ല ഒരു രാജ്യവുംസ്വതന്ത്ര രാജ്യമാകുന്നത്. 

പുറത്ത് അലങ്കാരത്തിന് വേണ്ടി പഞ്ചസാര എന്നെഴുതി വെച്ചത് കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം മുളക്പഞ്ചസാരയായി മാറില്ല എന്നോർക്കുക.

പകരം, സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം എന്നത് ആ രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾ പേടിയില്ലാത്തവരും സുരക്ഷിതരുംആവുമ്പോൾ മാത്രം സംഭവിക്കുന്നതാണ്. 

പകരം, ആ രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾ ജീവിതം ആഘോഷമാക്കുമ്പോഴാണ്, രാജ്യം ജീവിതത്തെആഘോഷമാക്കാനാവുന്ന ഇടമാവുമ്പോഴാണ്.

വെറും ബാഹ്യമായ ചില ഉരുവിടലുകളല്ല രാജ്യസ്നേഹം. 

രാജ്യം ജനങ്ങളെ സ്നേഹിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ക്ഷേമവും സുരക്ഷിതത്വവുംസുരക്ഷിതത്വബോധവും നൽകുമ്പോൾ ജനങ്ങളിൽ സ്വാഭാവികമായും തിരിച്ചുസംഭവിക്കുന്ന, മൊട്ടിടുന്ന ഒരു സ്വാഭാവിക വികാരവും വിചാരവും കൂടിയാണ് രാജ്യസ്നേഹം.

എങ്കിൽ ആ രാജ്യത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കാൻ ആരും പറയേണ്ടി വരില്ല; വെറും വെറുതെയങ്ങ്സ്നേഹിച്ചുപോകും. 

മാതാപിതാക്കൾ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ സ്നേഹവും ലാളനയും കരുതലും ശ്രദ്ധയും പരിരക്ഷയുംമക്കൾക്ക് നൽകാതെ മക്കളിൽ നിന്ന് തിരിച്ചു പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ട ഒന്നല്ല മാതൃസ്നേഹവുംപിതൃസ്നേഹവും. രാജ്യസ്നേഹവും മറിച്ചല്ല. 

രാജ്യ ഭരണാധികാരികൾ ഇതോർക്കണം.

ഭരണാധികാരികൾക്ക് തോന്നിയത് പോലെ ആഘോഷിക്കാനും ജീവിക്കാനും ചെയ്യാനും വേണ്ടിജനങ്ങൾ രാജ്യത്തെ സ്നേഹിക്കുകയല്ല. 

തങ്ങളുടെ തെമ്മാടിത്തത്തിനെ തുടർത്താൻ ജനങ്ങളെ പേടിപ്പിക്കുകയല്ല രാജ്യസ്നേഹം ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻവേണ്ടി ഭരണാധികാരികൾ ചെയ്യേണ്ടത്.

ചൂഷണത്തിലും പേടിയിലും പീഡനങ്ങളിലും അരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിലും സ്വന്തം പൗരന്മാരെ നിർത്തുന്ന, സ്വന്തം പൗരന്മാരെ എന്തിന്റെ പേരിലായാലും പേടിപ്പിച്ച് കയ്യൊഴിയുന്ന രാജ്യവും  ഭരണാധികാരികളും ഏതായാലും സ്നേഹിക്കപ്പെടില്ല.

ജനങ്ങളെ സംശയിച്ച് അനാഥരാക്കുന്ന, അരക്ഷിതരാക്കുന്ന രാജ്യത്തെ ജനങ്ങളും സംശയിച്ച്അനാഥയാക്കിപ്പോവുക സാധാരണം.

ജീവിക്കാൻ വകയില്ലാതെ, മിനിമം ഉപജീവനം പോലും കിട്ടാതെ, ഉപജീവനം പോലും ഉറക്കാതെവിദേശങ്ങളിൽ ജോലിയും പൗരത്വവും അന്വേഷിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന സവർണ്ണരും ഗുജറാത്തികളുംഅടങ്ങുന്ന പാവം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരോട് കണ്ണുരുട്ടി പേടിപ്പിച്ച്, അടിച്ചേൽപിച്ച് ആവശ്യപ്പെടേണ്ട ഒന്നല്ലരാജ്യസ്നേഹം.
